2013 Reunion is a Great Success

The Band of Gold Alumni Association held a reunion to benefit the Robert R. Cotter Memorial Scholarship during the weekend of June 22.  A banquet was held on June 22, and there was a picnic on June 23.  It was a great opportunity for alumni to reunite, reminisce, and raise funds to help worthy students as they start their college careers.  The weekend proved to be a great financial success, as alumni made generous donations, participated in a 50/50 raffle, and purchased CDs and DVDs.  In fact, the amount raised for the scholarship fund, after all expenses was $11,781.26!

The banquet started with an opening reception in which members enjoyed getting caught up with old friends, and told BOG stories.  Memorabilia, including uniforms was on display, and many pictures were taken.  As dinnertime approached, Master of Ceremonies Bob Cotter, Jr. requested that the Drum Majors in attendance come to the front of the room.  Steve Dieter (1969 and 1970), David Brittain (1974) and Troy Fontaine (1980) then continued a special Band of Gold tradition:  Leading the members in singing the Lord's Prayer and Alma Mater.  A delicious buffet was served before the program.  Bob Cotter's remarks were both thought provoking and amusing.  "Junior" then introduced three of our scholarship recipients, Jessica Ringelspaugh (2008), Erik Schroeder (2011), and Christopher Cates (2012).  All three told the crowd about the impact their relatives had made on their lives, and how the lessons of the Band of Gold and the "Boss" had been passed on to them.  Finally, Judge Joe Donahey made an inspirational speech as he recounted memories of Mr. Cotter and  the music program he was responsible for.  After Judge Donahey received a standing ovation, it was time for the 50/50 drawing.  Sherry (Graham) Marecek won over $600, with which she made a very generous donation to the scholarship fund.  The remainder of the evening was spent with additional reminiscing and dancing.

A large crowd filled the shelter at Taylor Park the following day.  It was a pot luck event, and attendees responded by bringing lots of goodies.  Everyone enjoyed talking over the events of the prior evening, which triggered even more memories to talk about.

Lisa (Mattei) Fontaine's brother Dan was kind enough to serve as our photographer for the reunion weekend.  His pictures have been posted on our photo page for all to enjoy.  We invite anyone who was in attendance to forward their pictures to If possible, please include a description of the pictures with names.

The 2013 Band of Gold reunion was just a teaser for our next big reunion.  The 50th anniversary of Bob Cotter's arrival at Largo High and the formation of the Band of Gold will be happening during the 2017-2018 school year.  The Largo Library has already been in touch with us about hosting a full Band of Gold exhibit.  While there is still some time to go until this special anniversary, plans will begin soon to make this a big celebration.  Information will be posted on this web site as the date approaches.
