Planning Continues for our 50th Anniversary Reunion

posted Oct 29, 2017, 4:18 PM by LBOG AA

Reservations have been coming in at a rapid pace for our big reunion commemorating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Band of Gold. If you have been waiting to make your reunion reservations until arrangements have been made for guest rooms at our host hotel, please wait no longer! The Holiday Inn Harbourside has set aside a block of luxury rooms at a discount from their normal rates. Please visit their website at www.hiharbourside.com or call them at 727-595-9484 and mention the code "LBG"  for details. Our reunion committee has also searched for alternative accommodations at nearby hotels. The Hampton Inn is located directly across from Largo Central Park and the Largo Library at 100 East Bay Drive (866-272-4856). They offer rates starting at $159 per night. The Holiday Inn Express is a few miles away, but they offer lower rates. They are located at 13625 Icot Blvd. in Clearwater (855-799-6861). They offer rates starting at $111 per night. Both the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express advise that reservations should be made using www.expedia.com in order to receive the most favorable rates, since their rates are not exclusive to Band of Gold members.

The Holiday Inn Harbourside on Indian Rocks Beach will be our main venue. The festivities begin on Friday evening, July 13, 2018 with a welcome reception at Jimmy Guana's, a restaurant/lounge at the Holiday Inn, which has indoor and outdoor gathering spots. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided, and there will be a cash bar. Saturday morning will start off with a visit to a special exhibit of our history at the Largo Library, featuring some memorabilia that has never been displayed before. After enjoying the Library exhibit we will cross East Bay Drive to Largo High School. We will tour the new facility and see how the hallowed halls have changed. Finally on Saturday evening our Golden Anniversary banquet will be held, complete with good food, memories, and fellowship. Suggested attire is casual Friday evening and Saturday morning, and cocktail/business casual for the Saturday evening banquet. There is ample time built into our schedule for you to get together with your best friends and classmates on your own. The price for the weekend events is $95.00 per person, which includes hors d'oeuvres on Friday evening, the banquet on Saturday, tax and gratuities. Profits from the reunion will be used to fund future Robert R. Cotter Memorial Scholarships. While the Holiday Inn Harbourside has a large banquet room, we may push the capacity should there be an extremely large turnout. We urge all of you to consider making reservations as soon as possible to ensure that you can be part of this very special event. Paid reservations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Don't risk getting shut out by waiting too late to make and pay for your reservations! Please click on the "2018 Reunion" tab on this website to make your reservations. We will accept credit card payments, but since the Alumni Association will be charged a fee for these payments, please consider paying by check. Every dollar we save can benefit a future scholarship recipient.

To add to the nostalgia of our reunion weekend, we are bringing back the classic Band of Gold practice tee shirt! It will be the perfect thing to wear (along with dark blue shorts, of course) while touring the new Largo High School and admiring all of the memorabilia we have collected at the Largo Library. The price for these very special shirts is just $12 each. The shirts must be ordered in advance when registering online for the reunion, and can be picked up at the Holiday Inn Harbourside when the festivities start on Friday evening. Shirts will not be sold at the reunion or by mail; they must be ordered in advance. This is to control our costs by saving on postage and avoiding excess inventory, thereby giving us more funds for future scholarships.

Please feel free to contact us at admin@lbogaa.org if you have any questions.

50th Anniversary Reunion Date Announced

posted Jun 18, 2016, 4:07 PM by LBOG AA   [ updated Mar 18, 2017, 4:21 PM ]

Mark your calendars! A golden anniversary celebration unlike any other is now being planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Largo Band of Gold. A reunion for all members, staff and friends of the Largo High School instrumental music program under former Band of Gold Director Robert R. Cotter will be held during the weekend of July 13, 2018. As part of the anniversary celebration, the Largo Library will be staging a month-long exhibit to commemorate the history of the Band of Gold. New items have been added to our collection of memorabilia since our last reunion, so the exhibit will be a must see for all Band of Gold members and fans. Even though the reunion is still over two years away, there are many other events to plan in order to hold a memorable event. Lisa (Mattei) Fontaine is heading up our reunion committee, and could use your help. If you would like to assist in planning this very special reunion, please contact Lisa at lisaf4767@gmail.com. If you have any Band of Gold memorabilia that you would like to donate or lend, please contact us at admin@lbogaa.org. Please note that we are especially interested in old audio and video recordings.

Reunion Planning Committee to Form

posted Nov 8, 2015, 2:30 PM by LBOG AA

It is hard to believe, but 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Largo Band of Gold.  To commemorate this special occasion, the Alumni Association is planning a special reunion.  While two years may seem like a long time away, plans must be made well in advance in order to stage a successful event.  For this reason, a reunion planning committee will be formed in early 2016.  On a recent survey, many of our members expressed an interest in serving on a reunion committee.  Those wishing to assist in planning this special event are encouraged to contact us at admin@lbogaa.org.  In addition to the 50th anniversary celebration, it has been suggested that another more informal reunion be held sometime in 2016.  The new reunion committee will consider a 2016 event as well.

Scholarship Applications are now Being Accepted. Eligibility Expanded.

The Largo Band of Gold Alumni Association is now accepting applications for the ninth annual Robert R. Cotter Memorial Scholarship.  This $2000 scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who most exemplifies the teachings of former Band of Gold Director Robert Cotter.  Starting this year, the eligibility requirements have been expanded to include undergraduate college students.  Applicants may now either be a graduating member of the Largo High School instrumental music program, or a family member of a Band of Gold graduate from 1968 to 1980 who are either high school seniors or enrolled in college.  Family members of Band of Gold graduates do not have to attend Largo High.  Any high school is acceptable.  Applications can either be downloaded or completed online by using the link on our homepage.  Applications must be submitted online, or postmarked no later than March 20, 2015.

The Robert R. Cotter Memorial Scholarship is funded entirely by donations and the sale of Band of Gold merchandise.  The Band of Gold Alumni Association has been approved as a charitable organization by the Internal Revenue Service, so donations are tax deductible.  Those interested in supporting the scholarship fund are urged to click on the "Donate" button on our homepage to give by using a credit card through Paypal.  Checks can be mailed to the following address:

Tax Exempt Status Reinstated

posted Sep 7, 2014, 8:33 PM by LBOG AA

The Internal Revenue Service recently informed the Band of Gold Alumni Association that our tax exempt status has been reinstated, retroactive to include all dates which were previously revoked.  This means that any contributions made last year can now be legally deducted, and future contributions will be tax exempt as well.  Remedies have also been taken to avoid misdirected mail so that future renewals are properly filed and there will be no more revocations.

In other news, the Board of Directors has voted to expand the eligibility of the Robert R. Cotter Memorial Scholarship, based on the results of a survey sent to our members. Scholarship applicants can now include students enrolled in college, provided they are either family members of Band of Gold graduates under Robert Cotter, or graduates of the Largo High School instrumental music program.  Prior to this change only high school seniors were eligible for the scholarship.  Applications for this $2000 scholarship will be available on this web site later this year.  Please be sure to apply if you are eligible!

Important News Regarding Our Tax Exempt Status

posted Jan 22, 2014, 7:27 AM by LBOG AA

There have been some complications with the Alumni Association's tax exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service.  Due to confusion with our address, which led to misdirected mail, we did not file to renew our exemption in a timely manner. Consequently, the IRS has revoked our tax exempt status, effective January 1, 2013. We have attempted to reverse this action, to no avail.  Apparently the quickest way for us to fix this is for us to reapply for exempt status.  Fortunately, we can request that our reinstatement be made retroactive to the date of the revocation.  However this process can take several months and may not be complete by the April 15 income tax filing deadline. We realize that this may be inconvenient for those of you who plan on using donations as a tax deduction.  We are very optimistic about our reinstatement, but unfortunately at this time we cannot legally state that we are a tax exempt organization. We will notify you as soon as our tax exempt status has been clarified. If this happens after April 15, you could file an amended return to legally claim your charitable donation. In the meantime, you may want to consult with your tax professional before taking a deduction for a Band of Gold donation. We apologize for the inconvenience.

2013 Reunion is a Great Success

posted Jul 6, 2013, 1:41 PM by LBOG AA   [ updated Aug 16, 2013, 6:44 AM ]

The Band of Gold Alumni Association held a reunion to benefit the Robert R. Cotter Memorial Scholarship during the weekend of June 22.  A banquet was held on June 22, and there was a picnic on June 23.  It was a great opportunity for alumni to reunite, reminisce, and raise funds to help worthy students as they start their college careers.  The weekend proved to be a great financial success, as alumni made generous donations, participated in a 50/50 raffle, and purchased CDs and DVDs.  In fact, the amount raised for the scholarship fund, after all expenses was $11,781.26!

The banquet started with an opening reception in which members enjoyed getting caught up with old friends, and told BOG stories.  Memorabilia, including uniforms was on display, and many pictures were taken.  As dinnertime approached, Master of Ceremonies Bob Cotter, Jr. requested that the Drum Majors in attendance come to the front of the room.  Steve Dieter (1969 and 1970), David Brittain (1974) and Troy Fontaine (1980) then continued a special Band of Gold tradition:  Leading the members in singing the Lord's Prayer and Alma Mater.  A delicious buffet was served before the program.  Bob Cotter's remarks were both thought provoking and amusing.  "Junior" then introduced three of our scholarship recipients, Jessica Ringelspaugh (2008), Erik Schroeder (2011), and Christopher Cates (2012).  All three told the crowd about the impact their relatives had made on their lives, and how the lessons of the Band of Gold and the "Boss" had been passed on to them.  Finally, Judge Joe Donahey made an inspirational speech as he recounted memories of Mr. Cotter and  the music program he was responsible for.  After Judge Donahey received a standing ovation, it was time for the 50/50 drawing.  Sherry (Graham) Marecek won over $600, with which she made a very generous donation to the scholarship fund.  The remainder of the evening was spent with additional reminiscing and dancing.

A large crowd filled the shelter at Taylor Park the following day.  It was a pot luck event, and attendees responded by bringing lots of goodies.  Everyone enjoyed talking over the events of the prior evening, which triggered even more memories to talk about.

Lisa (Mattei) Fontaine's brother Dan was kind enough to serve as our photographer for the reunion weekend.  His pictures have been posted on our photo page for all to enjoy.  We invite anyone who was in attendance to forward their pictures to admin@lbogaa.org. If possible, please include a description of the pictures with names.

The 2013 Band of Gold reunion was just a teaser for our next big reunion.  The 50th anniversary of Bob Cotter's arrival at Largo High and the formation of the Band of Gold will be happening during the 2017-2018 school year.  The Largo Library has already been in touch with us about hosting a full Band of Gold exhibit.  While there is still some time to go until this special anniversary, plans will begin soon to make this a big celebration.  Information will be posted on this web site as the date approaches.

The Largo Band of Gold Alumni Association Reunion Committee is excited to announce that a new DVD will be unveiled at the upcoming reunion banquet on June 22.  This DVD is a compilation of field shows, recorded as black and white home movies.  Here are the highlights:

The 1978 BOG performing at one the first halftime shows for the Tampa Bay Bucs.
An "interview" of Bob Cotter by Hans Schillings in 1985.

Many of these recordings have never been seen until now, and will make a great addition to any collection.  In addition, three other products are being remastered and will be available for sale starting at the reunion.  These include:

"A Chat with the Boss."  A can't miss interview with the "Boss."  Now on CD!
"The Magnificent Sound of Gold."  A double CD collection of Band of Gold recordings.
"The Magnificent Band of Gold."  Our first DVD, featuring performances in Europe.

All of these items will be on sale at the reunion.  Prices are $25 for either DVD, $20 for the "Magnificent Sound of Gold" double CD, and $15 for "A Chat with the Boss."  You can save money by purchasing all four items for just $75.  All profits from the sale of Band of Gold merchandise are used to fund the Robert R. Cotter Memorial Scholarship.  We will be unable to process credit cards at the reunion, so please bring cash or check to make a purchase.
