  • Reservations Now Being Taken for 50th Anniversary Reunion The time has arrived to make your reservations for our big reunion commemorating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Band of Gold. The Holiday Inn Harbourside on Indian Rocks Beach will be hosting the event. The festivities begin on Friday evening, July 13, 2018 with a welcome reception at Jimmy Guanas, a restaurant/lounge at the Holiday Inn, which has indoor and outdoor gathering spots. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided, and there will be a cash bar. Saturday morning will start off with a visit to a special exhibit of our history at the Largo Library, featuring some memorabilia that has never been displayed before.   • 50th Anniversary Reunion Date Announced Mark your calendars! A golden anniversary celebration unlike any other is now being planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Largo Band of Gold. A reunion for all members, staff and friends of the Largo High School instrumental music program under former Band of Gold Director Robert R. Cotter will be held during the weekend of July 13, 2018. As part of the anniversary celebration, the Largo Library will be staging a month-long exhibit to commemorate the history of the Band of Gold.   • Reunion Planning Committee to Form It is hard to believe, but 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Largo Band of Gold.  To commemorate this special occasion, the Alumni Association is planning a special reunion.  While two years may seem like a long time away, plans must be made well in advance in order to stage a successful event.  For this reason, a reunion planning committee will be formed in early 2016.  On a recent survey, many of our members expressed an interest in serving on a reunion committee.  Those wishing to assist in planning this special event are encouraged to contact us at admin@lbogaa.org.  In addition to the 50th anniversary celebration, it has been suggested that another more informal ...

  • Scholarship Applications are now Being Accepted. Eligibility Expanded. The Largo Band of Gold Alumni Association is now accepting applications for the ninth annual Robert R. Cotter Memorial Scholarship.  This $2000 scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who most exemplifies the teachings of former Band of Gold Director Robert Cotter.  Starting this year, the eligibility requirements have been expanded to include undergraduate college students.  Applicants may now either be a graduating member of the Largo High School instrumental music program, or a family member of a Band of Gold graduate from 1968 to 1980 who are either high school seniors or enrolled in college.  Family members of Band of Gold graduates do not have to attend Largo High.  Any high school is acceptable.  Applications can either be downloaded ...

  • Tax Exempt Status Reinstated The Internal Revenue Service recently informed the Band of Gold Alumni Association that our tax exempt status has been reinstated, retroactive to include all dates which were previously revoked.  This means that any contributions made last year can now be legally deducted, and future contributions will be tax exempt as well.  Remedies have also been taken to avoid misdirected mail so that future renewals are properly filed and there will be no more revocations.In other news, the Board of Directors has voted to expand the eligibility of the Robert R. Cotter Memorial Scholarship, based on the results of a survey sent to our members. Scholarship applicants can now include students enrolled in college, provided they are either family members ...

  • Important News Regarding Our Tax Exempt Status There have been some complications with the Alumni Association's tax exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service.  Due to confusion with our address, which led to misdirected mail, we did not file to renew our exemption in a timely manner. Consequently, the IRS has revoked our tax exempt status, effective January 1, 2013. We have attempted to reverse this action, to no avail.  Apparently the quickest way for us to fix this is for us to reapply for exempt status.  Fortunately, we can request that our reinstatement be made retroactive to the date of the revocation.  However this process can take several months and may not be complete by the April 15 income tax filing deadline.   • 2013 Reunion is a Great Success The Band of Gold Alumni Association held a reunion to benefit the Robert R. Cotter Memorial Scholarship during the weekend of June 22.  A banquet was held on June 22, and there was a picnic on June 23.  It was a great opportunity for alumni to reunite, reminisce, and raise funds to help worthy students as they start their college careers.  The weekend proved to be a great financial success, as alumni made generous donations, participated in a 50/50 raffle, and purchased CDs and DVDs.  In fact, the amount raised for the scholarship fund, after all expenses was $11,781.26!The banquet started with an opening reception in which members enjoyed getting caught up with old friends, and ...

Cotter Memorial Scholarship.  This $2000 scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school senior who most exemplifies the teachings of former Band of Gold Director Robert Cotter.  Eligible applicants must be a member of the Largo High School instrumental music program or a family member of a Band of Gold graduate.  Applications can either be downloaded or completed online by using the link on our homepage.  Applications must be submitted online or postmarked no later than March 22, 2013.   To date, the Alumni Association has awarded ten scholarships.  These scholarships are funded entirely from donations and the sale of Band of Gold ...

  • Reunion Plans Announced Mark your calendars!  The Largo Band of Gold Alumni Association is pleased to announce that a reunion to benefit the Robert R. Cotter Memorial Scholarship Fund will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2013 starting at 6:00 PM (don't even think about being late).  The event will be held at :   Banquet Masters 8100 Park Blvd. N.   • Revamped Website Launched The Largo Band of Gold Alumni Association has recently launched a revamped website.  We hope you spend a little time and enjoy the articles, pictures and music.  The History page includes a detailed account of events that occurred during key periods of our history, as recalled by Joe Donahey.  The Memory Book contains essays written by a number of individuals; many with differing points of view.  These stories range from poignant to amusing.  Music and Videos will have a large library of Band of Gold audio and video recordings.  These should be available later this summer.  Be sure to catch the latest news in the section you are looking at now, such as reunion announcements.  Our Photo Gallery has captioned ...
